Do you know that there are three different formats of a resume? Do you know the structure of each format? Do you know which format applies to you? Well, in this short post, I'll name and describe the formats. I'll tell you which format applies to you and I'll show you how easy it is switching between the formats.
There are three recognized formats of a resume, chronological resume, functional resume and combination resume. A chronological format is the most common resume format and is designed for someone with employment experience who also has an unbroken work history. This is because the current and previous work history is considered the most relevant by the applicant. At the very top of the resume are the Name, Address & Contact Details. Then the Employment Details which may include voluntary details. Followed by the education details, certification details, qualification details, achievement details and accomplishment details.
A functional resume format is ideal for recent graduates, people re-entering the workforce, people switching careers or those who have an inconsistent work history. This format is designed to highlight qualifications, certificates, & skills before the employment history. Essentially this format is used to place an emphasis on the education history and skills rather than the employment history. The resume begins with the name, address and contact details. Then the education details. Followed by the certification details, qualification details, achievement details, accomplishment details, then the employment details and if necessary the voluntary details.
A combination resume is a mixture of the chronological and functional resume formats and is designed to highlight qualifications, skills and abilities that are relevant to a specific job. The education details and employment details and other less important accomplishments are displayed towards the bottom or the end of the resume. The name, address and contact details are placed at the top of the resume, then the certification details, qualification details, achievement details, accomplishment details, then the employment details which may include your voluntary details and lastly the education details.
